The island is small. The day you book decides it.
Whether the catamaran to Soufriere beats the minibus down. What the sulphur springs really cost once lunch is in. How early the Gros Piton guides start. Reviews of the tours you can book on St Lucia.
Four days that cover most of what people come to St Lucia for.
The sail down the coast, the volcano, the cocoa estate and the boat with a snorkel stop. What each costs and what the people who took it say.
01The default first daySt. Lucia Land and Sea TourDown the west coast by road and back by water, with the springs and a beach stop folded in. Long, and it takes the guesswork out of day one.
02The day on deckSt Lucia Full-Day Catamaran Sightseeing Cruise With SnorkelingRodney Bay to Soufriere under sail, snorkel gear on board and the Pitons rising as you come round the headland.
03The volcano daySt Lucia Diamond Mineral and Mud Baths Plus Waterfall AdventureWarm mud, a rinse under a waterfall and a drive through the caldera floor. Bring clothes you do not mind staining.
04The cocoa afternoonProject Chocolat Tree to Bar Tour at Hotel Chocolat Saint LuciaA working estate above Soufriere where the beans get roasted, ground and turned into a bar you make yourself.
Every good west-coast day on St Lucia ends up on a boat.
The road to Soufriere is an hour and a half of hairpins. The water is flat, the Pitons arrive slowly, and lunch happens on deck. Three kinds of sailing day, and what it costs to board each one.
Soufriere is where the island turns dramatic.
A collapsed volcano with a road through it, two peaks straight out of the sea, mineral mud at bath temperature and waterfalls stained orange by the same water. Most visitors give it one day. It rewards two.
The north sleeps, the south is the scenery, Castries sits between them.
Three parts of a small island, an hour or so apart on a road that takes longer than the map suggests. Each one has a different best day out.
The St Lucia tours more people take than any other.

What a day out on St Lucia actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. The island has a reputation for being dear, and the cheap end of this list argues with it.
The standards: the springs, the aerial tram, the rainforest hikes and most catamaran days.

Three things St Lucia has that its neighbours do not.
Every Caribbean island sells a beach and a rum punch. A volcano you drive into, a peak you can climb before breakfast and a rainforest crossed by cable car are harder to copy.

The drive-in volcano
The road runs into the caldera at Soufriere and stops beside pools of grey mineral mud at about body temperature. You wade in, coat yourself, let it dry, then rinse off under the falls at Diamond or Toraille. The sulphur smell stays in swimwear for weeks, so take something you do not care about, and go early before the tour buses land.

Gros Piton before the heat
Gros Piton is the walkable one, and only with a guide from the interpretive centre at Fond Gens Libre. It is roughly two hours up over tree roots and loose rock, then the same back down on tired knees. Groups leave early because the last third has no shade at all, and the view over Petit Piton is the reason nobody minds the start time.

The rainforest by cable car
An open gondola lifts you through the canopy at Rainforest Adventures, level with the epiphytes and the hummingbirds, then you walk back down through the forest with a guide naming what you are hearing. It is the one rainforest option that works for people who cannot manage a steep trail, and the ziplines run from the same base.

Four St Lucia bookings that will not wait for you.
Most of this island can be arranged over breakfast the day before. These four run on guide rosters, single daily sailings and a road that is longer than it looks on the map.
- 01Gros Piton Hike with Dannyboy & Co.The climb goes with a registered guide and the parties leave early, before the upper slope loses its shade.
- 02Ferry Transfer from Hewanorra Airport to Saint Lucia ResortsHewanorra sits at the far south end of the island, well over an hour from the northern hotels. Arrange the transfer before the flight, not at the arrivals hall.
- 03St Lucia Full-Day Catamaran Sightseeing Cruise With SnorkelingThe big catamarans run one sailing a day down to Soufriere, and they leave on time whether or not you are on the dock.
- 04Project Chocolat Tree to Bar Tour at Hotel Chocolat Saint LuciaCocoa estate sessions run at fixed times in small groups, and there are only a handful of slots each day.
Rain comes off the Barre de l’Isle most afternoons. Plan around it.
St Lucia rain arrives fast, soaks the interior road and is usually gone in an hour. Two ways to spend it: something already wet, or something under a roof. Mud baths and waterfalls do not care about the weather, and a cocoa estate or a rum distillery is better in it.
Rodney Bay to Soufriere, in the order most first trips end up doing it.
